The Committee on Adult Immunization, Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) and the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination recommends the following routine immunization for adults with the target individuals and schedule : (NOTE: Contraindications are not included in this post).
Tetanus, Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis (inactivated vaccine, intramuscular)
- Recommended for all adults particularly pregnant and postpartum
- Healthcare workers
- Adolescents
- 3 doses (1 Tdap + 2 *Tetanus diphtheria (Td)) at 0, 1, 6-12 months
- *Note: If Td is not available may use tetanus toxoid
- Booster every 10 years with Td
Influenza (Trivalent Inactivated vaccine, Intramuscular or Intradermal)
- Recommended particularly for Individuals 50 years or older
- Healthcare workers
- Residents of chronic care facilities and nursing homes
- With chronic disorders
- HIV/AIDS
- Immunosuppressed due to medications
- Pregnant women in the 2nd or 3rd trimester without a flu shot in the last 12 months
- Healthy persons providing essential and emergency customer services
- Students and other persons in institutional settings
- Single dose, annually
Hepatitis B (inactivated vaccine, Single antigen or combination with Hepatitis A, Intramuscular)
- Recommended particularly for those seeking protection from Hepatitis B infection and who are not previously vaccinated
- Healthcare workers
- Household contacts and sex partners of persons with chronic Hep B infection or HBV carriers
- Recipients of blood products
- Sexually active persons
- Immigrants from areas of high HBsAg endemicity
- Clients and staff members of institutions for persons with disabilities
- Travelers to countries with high or intermediate prevalence of chronic Hep B infection
- IV drug users
- Diabetics
- End stage renal disease and on hemodialysis
- Persons with HIV/AIDS
- Chronic liver disease
- 3 doses (0, 1, 6 months) or 4 doses (0, 1, 2, 12 months)
- Combination Hep A and B regular schedule is 0, 1, 6 months or Accelerated schedule (Days 0, 7, 21-30 and at 12 months)
- Booster is not routinely recommended
Varicella (Live attenuated, subcutaneous)
- Recommended particularly for those more than 13 years old without history of varicella infection or vaccination
- Healthcare workers
- Teachers
- Non-pregnant women of childbearing age
- International travellers
- Military
- 2 doses (0, 1-2 months)
- Post-exposure prophylaxis: given within 72 hours of exposure, single dose
Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) – Live attenuated, subcutaneous
- Recommended particularly for those without documented evidence of immunity to any one of the components or disease (especially non-pregnant women or child-bearing age)
- Healthcare workers
- Travellers
- 2 doses (0, 1 month)
Pneumococcal (Polysaccharide or PPSV23 – intramuscular or subcutaneous; Conjugate or PCV13- intramuscular)
- Recommended particularly for age 50 years and older without a history of pneumococcal vaccination
- For those below 50 years with either of the following: chronic lung disease, chronic cardiovascular/renal/liver diseases, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, cochlear implants, CSF fluid leaks, Immunocompromised conditions
- Residents of nursing home or long-term care facilities
- smokers
- Single dose
- Booster may be given: For those 65 years and above who received their first dose more than 5 years ago and before they reached age 65; For those below 65 years who received the vaccine more than 5 years ago and who are immunocompromised.
Human Papilloma virus (Recombinant vaccine, Intramuscular; Bivalent for females only and Quadrivalent for females and males)
- For females 10-18 years old but may be given as early as 9 years old and as catch up vaccination to as late as 19-55 years old
- For males 10-26 years old but may be given as catch up vaccination to 13-21 years old who have not been previously vaccinated or who have not completed the 3-dose series.
- 3 doses: Bivalent (0, 1, 6 months); quadrivalent (0, 2, 6 months)
